Today is World Radiography Day and International
Day of Radiology and we’re checking in with one
of our brilliant teams to see what makes them tick.
And as a further boost, they’ve just
been awarded a ‘highly commended’ in the HSJ Awards on Wednesday night – a
great effort in a national competition that seeks to highlight excellence
across the health sector.
Nicholas Barlow, consultant radiographer at Rotherham,
said the work his team does is a vital part of the system because most people
will need imaging when they come to the hospital.
He said: “It is all cutting-edge technology. The new
consultant-led service has made it more effective. It is a very fast service
and has made a big difference to patients.
“Where several trusts in the region provide plain film
image reports for patients within two weeks we can provide them within three
days, which is something we are extremely proud of.”
Nicholas said there was a national shortage of
radiographers because it is so central to most things happening in the
“We are struggling to raise awareness of the profession.
A big problem is that on TV it is still all doctors and nurses.”
Nicholas said there were different avenues for people
hoping to enter the profession. “There is a career pathway for people. They can
train to be reporters. We provide high levels of training.”
Next year is the Society of Radiographers centenary and
the team are planning to do an awareness campaign to highlight their profession.
