Runners urged to show their steel spirit for Purple Butterfly Appeal

Fundraisers with a flair for tackling Sheffield’s infamous seven hills are being sought to take part in the Run for All Sheffield 10K to raise money for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity.

The charity has 10 places available for this year’s road race, which takes place on Sunday 23 September in the Steel City. The spots are once again available for Trust colleagues, volunteers and members of the public following the success of last year’s team who raised £2,100 for the Purple Butterfly Appeal.
All the money raised will help the charity to fund a fourth Purple Butterfly room at Rotherham Hospital. The £75,000 purpose-built rooms offer privacy and dignity to patients nearing the end of their lives, and their families.
Gabby Atmarow, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “We hadn’t seen an official team participating in the Sheffield 10K before so we were incredibly proud to see 10 colleagues and members of the public running for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity in 2017.
“We’re now looking to rally support for this year’s event and are looking for keen runners who enjoy a personal and fundraising challenge to fill our 10 places. We’re edging nearer and nearer to the amount we need to raise to install our fourth Purple Butterfly room so you could really help us make a massive difference to patients in Rotherham in 2018.”

The Sheffield 10K route begins at Arundel Gate and takes runners on a journey along Charter Row and along Ecclesall Road, before skirting the edges of Endcliffe Park. It continues along Riverdale Road, Endcliffe Vale Road, close to the Botanical Gardens, then travels down Brocco Bank and back to the finish line in the city centre.

Heather Hind, of Moorgate in Rotherham, is supporting the Charity’s bid to introduce an additional Purple Butterfly room at Rotherham Hospital after losing her husband Peter in August 2017. Peter passed away in the Purple Butterfly room on Ward A2 following complications caused by a broken hip.

Heather said: “Peter was looked after for two weeks in the Purple Butterfly room and we couldn’t have asked for more. It was absolutely fantastic and very much like having our own private apartment. It was comfortable with everything I could have needed, including a fridge, kettle, microwave, a recliner chair and sofa bed so I could sleep over.

“The Purple Butterfly room was spacious and private, which meant I could invite our family and friends to support me and to say goodbye to Peter without crowding into a bay. We played Peter’s favourite organ music to him which made him smile and helped him recognise his surroundings and visitors more. That was amazing and really helped keep me going too. Having access to the room meant I was also able to cope with such an upsetting experience better.

“It has left a lasting, positive impression on me and I think we should do all we can to continue to fund Purple Butterfly rooms. Good luck to everyone who takes part in the Sheffield 10K for the Purple Butterfly Appeal – your fundraising really will benefit families like me when time really is most precious.”
