Charity lights the way with ward refurbishment

Families visiting loved ones receiving critical care at Rotherham Hospital are benefitting from a colourful and uplifting environment thanks to new ceiling lights funded by the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity.

The Charity has teamed up with lighting specialists Visualite and Yesss Electrical in Rotherham to illuminate the entrance to the High Dependency and Intensive Care Units with blue skies and trees.

Janet Lockwood, Ward Manager for ITU and HDU, said: “The Critical Care Team work hard to provide high quality care and the best environment for our patients while they are requiring treatment. The families of our patients spend a lot of time with us and a large amount of this is spent in the relative’s room and on our corridor. They are understandably distressed and anxious.

“We wanted to change the dark, dull and unwelcoming corridor into a bright, uplifting and serene space where relatives can appreciate the quiet time they need when their loved ones are ill.

“I’m sure that changing our surroundings in such a creative and thoughtful way will have a big impact on the wellbeing of our patients and their families.”

The £10,000 project took just a week to install and has been made possible thanks to funding from the Charity and colleagues from ICU and HDU who entered a Visualite competition to win £5,000 towards the cost of light panels to enhance their workplace.

Steve Nelson, Creator at Visualite, said: “Some environments lend themselves to our Visualite system more than others and we knew the ITU and HDU corridor at Rotherham Hospital could be transformed wonderfully with the extra light and colour they provide. We’re so pleased with the result because now patients, families and colleagues have a bright welcome onto the ward.

“We worked hard on the biophilic design process, ensuring the imagery of trees and clouds in each panel section are unique. The way the project has been installed and executed so well by the Estates team at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust also makes it a project the whole team can be very proud of.”

The Charity has previously funded £20,000 for 11 Visualite ceiling and wall light systems, which have helped to transform clinical areas at Rotherham Hospital into bright and positive spaces.

Partners at Rotherham-based YESSS Electrical have been involved in the installation of the panels in all areas.

Chris Holmes, Branch Manager at YESSS Electrical, added: “It’s really rewarding for us to see and hear all the positive feedback about the remarkable difference the lighting effect has made on the HDU and ICU corridor.

“The feedback we’ve received from other hospital projects show that colour and light have a positive impact on reducing stress and anxiety, so we hope the environment proves to be comforting and uplifting for patients, families and NHS professionals alike.”

The Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity raises money to help fund resources and equipment for patients and their families being cared for at Rotherham Hospital and in the community.

Thanks to generous donors and fundraisers, the Charity raised £163,731 in 2017/18. All the funds raised helped to purchase the added extras which the NHS is unable to fund.

Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “Thanks to the amazing fundraisers who support the Charity and a very well deserved competition win, we’ve been able to transform the entrance to the HDU and ITU wards with some wonderful Visualite ceiling lights. Colleagues described the area as ‘dull, dingy and claustrophobic’ before the work was completed but it now feels much more serene and beautiful.”
